This Kurdish town in northern Iraq's Kurdistan Region, north of Sulaymaniyah near the Iranian border, holds an unusual concentration of churches for its size. Surrounded by mountains and close to Dukan Lake, it sits at the centre of Pişder District — its name translating from Kurdish as "fortress of the two rivers," a reference to a modest hill between two waterways to the town's southwest.
