Ringsted
Denmark
St. Bendt's Church, completed in 1170 as Denmark's first brick church, anchors this town in central Zealand, where it holds the tombs of numerous medieval Danish kings and queens. Ringsted is one of Zealand's oldest cities, with origins traceable to the Viking Age — coins were minted here under Canute the Great — and a central square that preserves the Thingstones, the last remnant of the medieval assembly site. The town has good rail connections to Copenhagen and the wider island.
