A historic Dutch town at the confluence of the Meuse and Roer rivers, Roermond has held town rights since 1231 and served as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese since 1559. Its protected centre is dense with listed buildings and monuments, dominated by the towers of St. Christopher's Cathedral and the Munsterkerk. The town also borders the Maasplassen, a large network of lakes and waterways that supports marinas and water sports.
