This small Swiss town in the canton of Valais where the Rhône valley narrows to a pass, Saint-Maurice has been a strategic gateway since antiquity — the site of the Roman outpost of Agaunum and the 6th-century Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune. A fortress built into the surrounding mountainsides from 1880 through 1995 marks its long defensive history. The town sits close to the Alps, with vineyards nearby, scenic viewpoints in the surrounding terrain, and a café and restaurant scene that is well stocked for its size.
