A mountain town in Guatemala's Alta Verapaz department, San Cristóbal Verapaz sits beside Laguna Chichoj, a lake whose shores the town's urban growth has gradually reached. The settlement dates to at least 1574 and was founded around the same time as nearby Cobán, serving for centuries as the western gateway into the Verapaz region. Its main industry is the Calzado Cobán shoe factory, established in 1914 and known for its handmade Rhino rubber boots, sold in local and international markets.
