Founded in 1543 by Dominican friars, Santa Cruz Verapaz is a little town in Guatemala's Alta Verapaz department set within a rainforest climate zone, with mountains close by. Its Catholic church dates to the late 16th century. The town maintains Indigenous cultural traditions — including traditional dress, food, dance, and music — and holds its annual festival in the first days of May.
