San Esteban de Gormaz
Soria · Spain
This small Castilian town on the bank of the River Duero, San Esteban de Gormaz carries a long frontier history: contested between Arab and Christian forces for some two centuries, it hosted the first Cortes of Castile in 1187 and reached its peak with four parishes and two monasteries by the late 13th century. The nearby Arab-built Gormaz Castle survives from that era, and the historic centre holds protected status as a conjunto histórico-artístico. The town also sits along both the Wool Route and the Way of the Cid.
