A small Ixil Maya town in Guatemala's El Quiché department, set against the slopes of the Cuchumatanes and Sierra de Chamá ranges, San Juan Cotzal is one of three municipalities that make up the Ixil Community, alongside Nebaj and Chajul. The area has been inhabited since at least the Classic Maya period, and archaeological sites in the region have yielded stone sculptures, painted ceramics, and jade pieces from later pre-Columbian eras.
