Chichicastenango
Guatemala
A K'iche' Maya cultural centre in the Guatemalan highlands, Chichicastenango is best known for its Thursday and Sunday markets, where traditional Maya textiles are among the goods on offer. The town is also where the Popol Vuh — the K'iche' Maya sacred text recounting the origin of humanity, now recognised as Guatemala's National Book — was found and transcribed by Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez during the colonial period. The vast majority of the municipality's population is indigenous K'iche', and the language remains widely spoken alongside Spanish.
