San Juan La Laguna
Guatemala
A tiny Tz'utujil Maya town on the southwest shore of Lago de Atitlán in Guatemala's highlands, San Juan La Laguna has a café and restaurant scene that outpaces its size, set against mountain terrain with direct access to the lake. The population is almost entirely indigenous Tz'utujil, and a local law barring outside land purchases has kept the town less developed than neighbouring lakeside settlements. The lake sits at high elevation, with forested hills rising behind the town centre.
