On the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala's Sololá department, Santiago Atitlán is a Tz'utujil Maya town where the syncretic deity Maximón — a figure blending indigenous and colonial-era Catholic traditions — is actively venerated. Volcán San Pedro rises across the inlet. The town's economy mixes agriculture, craft production, and a well-developed hospitality sector, and its compact centre has cafés and restaurants alongside artisan markets.
