Stein am Rhein
Switzerland
Stein am Rhein sits on the Rhine where Lower Lake Constance meets the river, and its medieval centre — pedestrianised, lined with half-timbered houses, and covered in painted frescoes — is among the best-preserved in Switzerland. The ancient street plan survives intact, the old city gates still stand, and the surrounding canton of Schaffhausen is deep wine country with scenic viewpoints nearby. The town has a strong café and restaurant scene for its size.
