Strenči
Latvia
Historically known as the raftsmen capital of Latvia, Strenči sits on the Gauja river in the Vidzeme region, where timber rafting once defined the town's economy. Each May, a raftsmen festival marks that heritage. The town is also home to a psychiatric hospital founded in 1907 under the Livonian Knighthood, and borders the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. It lies in northern Latvia, roughly halfway between Valmiera and Valka, near the Estonian border.
