Valmiera

One of Latvia's oldest towns, Valmiera sits on both banks of the Gauja River in the Vidzeme region, with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants. A former member of the Hanseatic League, it holds the largest proportion of ethnic Latvians among the country's state cities and serves as the seat of Valmiera Municipality, a short drive north-east of Riga.
