Birthplace of two Bolivian presidents — Mariano Melgarejo and René Barrientos Ortuño — Tarata is a tiny colonial-era town in the south of Cochabamba Department, sometimes called the "Villa Colonial." Founded during the Spanish viceregal period, it sits at high elevation in the mountains, a short drive from Cochabamba city. The town is known locally for its homemade cheese and sausage.
