Tinmel
Al Haouz Province · Morocco
Tinmel, a tiny High Atlas village in Morocco, was the cradle of the Almohad empire, where the religious reformer Ibn Tumart founded the movement that launched military campaigns against the Almoravids in the early 12th century. The Marinids later destroyed the settlement almost entirely, leaving only the great mosque standing. That mosque, along with the ruins spread along the left bank of the Nfis river, still carries the ancient name and draws visitors making the journey from Marrakesh along the road toward Tizi n'Test pass.
