Tokmok
Kyrgyzstan
The ruins of Burana, the remains of the medieval Silk Road city of Balasagun and a northern capital of the Karakhanid state, lie just southwest of Tokmok, a town in the Chuy Valley of Kyrgyzstan. The fortress here was built in 1825 during the Khanate of Kokand's expansion into the valley, and Tokmok later served as a regional administrative centre before that role passed to Bishkek. The Chuy River runs alongside the town, with mountains visible from within it.
