Torre Annunziata sits directly above the buried Roman settlement of Oplontis, whose archaeological area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, listed alongside Pompeii and Herculaneum. The town on the Gulf of Naples, at the foot of Vesuvius, also built its modern identity on pasta production — at its peak it held more than sixty mills and pasta factories, and brands including Voiello and Setaro remain active here. The walkable centre has a dense food-and-drink scene and a concentration of historic churches, with vineyards on the volcanic slopes nearby.
