Trincomalee

Sri Lanka

A port city on Sri Lanka's east coast built around one of the world's great natural harbours, Trincomalee draws visitors for its beaches — particularly those just north of the city — and for the ancient Koneswaram temple, from which the city takes its Tamil name. The city changed hands repeatedly between Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, French, and British colonial powers from 1620 onward, and holds the largest Dutch fort on the island, alongside architecture that blends native and European styles.
