Uddevalla
Sweden
A waterfront town on Byfjorden, one of the Skagerrak's fjords, Uddevalla sits where the river Bäveån meets the sea on Sweden's west coast. The walkable centre has a good spread of cafés and restaurants, and the surrounding terrain offers scenic viewpoints across the water. The town's beaches hold one of the world's largest shell-banks. Repeated fires in the 18th and 19th centuries left few old wooden buildings standing; most surviving older architecture dates from the early 20th century.
