Västervik
Sweden
This coastal town on Sweden's eastern seaboard, Västervik sits at the mouth of Gamlebyviken bay and serves as a gateway to the Tjust archipelago. Dating to the 13th century, the town was burned by Danish forces in 1517 and again in 1677, rebuilt each time; the castle of Stegeholm was left a ruin after the second attack. The compact centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants close to the water. Tennis player Stefan Edberg and ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus are among the notable figures associated with the town.
