Yinxu
Henan Province · China
Yinxu, on the outskirts of Anyang in northern Henan, is the archaeological site of Yin, the final capital of China's Shang dynasty, occupied from around the 14th century BCE until the dynasty's fall. Excavations here, which began formally in 1928, yielded oracle bones bearing the earliest known Chinese writing. The site spans the Huan River and comprises royal tombs, palace and ancestral temple remains, and a walled city precinct. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, it is open to the public.
