A thermal spa town on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains has been known for its sulphurous springs since Roman times, when it was called Eburodunum. The 13th-century castle of the Dukes of Savoy served as an educational institute under Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi from 1805 to 1825 and is now a museum. The walkable centre has a lively food-and-drink scene and sits close to surrounding vineyards, with the Jura mountains visible in the distance. The town won the Wakker Prize in 2009 for its development of public spaces and the connection between the old town and the lake.
