Zeimelis
Lithuania
This modest town in northern Lithuania near the Latvian border, Žeimelis is protected as a state urbanistic monument and centres on a Gothic-style town square flanked by two 18th- and early 19th-century inns — the Great and Compact Taverns — whose end walls were adapted for defence. One inn now houses the Museum of Semigallia, open since 1993, which documents the history and culture of the Semigallia region. The town also has a Catholic church built in 1826, a Lutheran church, and an octagonal Swedish chapel.
