Zagare
Lithuania
Žagarė, a little city in northern Lithuania near the Latvian border, is known for its locally originated cherry variety, Žagarvyšnė, celebrated each year since 2005 at an annual cherry festival. The Švėtė river divides the historic centre — itself protected as an urban monument — into Old and New Žagarė, each with its own church: a stone one built in 1633 from local dolomite and a wooden one from 1712. A 19th-century neoclassical manor, two hillforts, and three former synagogues add to the town's layered heritage.
