Zgorzelec
Poland
Sitting on the Lusatian Neisse river at the Polish-German border, Zgorzelec was the eastern half of Görlitz until 1945 and retains that cross-border character today. The town has a walkable centre with a solid food-and-drink scene, and the surrounding Lower Silesian landscape offers scenic viewpoints and proximity to mountains. The wider region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites. Zgorzelec also carries a layered wartime history, having hosted a major German prisoner-of-war camp for Allied soldiers during World War II.
