Aabenraa

A fjord-side town in Southern Denmark with a walkable centre and a working harbour that ranks among the country's deepest, Aabenraa sits at the head of Aabenraa Fjord close to the German border. The town's name originally meant "open beach," and its waterfront character remains central. Inland, well-preserved 19th-century streetscapes survive around several historic lanes, alongside the medieval Sankt Nicolai Kirke and Brundlund Castle, founded by Queen Margrethe I around 1400.
