Bozhentsi

Bozhentsi is a Bulgarian village and architectural reserve in the Balkan Mountains whose cobblestone streets and stone-roofed houses have been frozen in National Revival style since 1964, when construction rules banned any building out of keeping with the historic fabric. The village traces its origins to the 16th century, when refugees from Ottoman-occupied Veliko Tarnovo settled here; their descendants built the 1835 Prophet Elijah basilica — unusually permitted a belfry by Ottoman authorities — and an 1872 school that now serves as a gallery.
