Perched on a prominent hill above French Flanders, Cassel is a modest commune in the Nord department with panoramic views from the summit of Mont Cassel and a history stretching back to Roman times. The town hosts the Nord department's principal museum of local art, history, and folklore, and is known for its carnival each Easter, when the legendary giant effigies Reuze-Papa and Reuze-Maman are paraded through the streets. It served as Marshal Ferdinand Foch's headquarters during part of the First World War.
