Comines-Warneton - Komen-Waasten
France
A Wallonian town on the Lys river, Comines-Warneton sits as a geographic curiosity: a French-speaking exclave of Belgium entirely surrounded by Flemish West Flanders and the French département of Nord, with no land connection to the rest of Wallonia. The municipality was formed in 1977 from five merged communities, including Ploegsteert, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. Its name is thought to derive from Celtic or Gaulish roots.
