Named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, Ceres sits in the fertile Warmbokkeveld Valley in the Western Cape, where the surrounding farmland makes it one of South Africa's major deciduous fruit-producing regions. The town lies on the Dwars River at the north-eastern entrance to Michell's Pass, historically the route north from Cape Town before the N1 highway replaced it. It serves as the administrative and economic centre of the Witzenberg municipality, with Wolseley, Tulbagh, and Prince Alfred Hamlet among the surrounding towns it anchors.
