Paarl
South Africa
Paarl is the largest city in South Africa's Cape Winelands, set along the Berg River with the mountains close behind. The area is known for viticulture and fruit-growing, and the granite mass of Paarl Rock — one of the world's largest rock outcrops — is a national monument. The city also holds a place in modern history: Nelson Mandela walked free from Drakenstein Correctional Centre here on 11 February 1990, an event broadcast live internationally, and a bronze statue of him now stands outside the prison.
