Little township in Taitung County, Taiwan, known across the island for its rice — grown between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Range in the Huadong Valley, where abundant rainfall and mineral-rich water from upstream produce the celebrated "Chishang rice" and the boxed lunches made from it. Founded by indigenous Makatao settlers, the township holds an annual Night Ceremony each November. It has a lively café and restaurant scene for its size, with mountains and water both within easy reach.
