Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, made this small medieval village in the Aude his base between 1206 and 1215, preaching to the Cathars of the surrounding Lauragais region. Fanjeaux sits west of Carcassonne in wine-growing country with the mountains visible on the horizon, and the wider region holds UNESCO World Heritage sites. The village retains two listed monuments: the church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, classified in 1908, and a medieval cross inscribed in 1948.
