Gemert
Netherlands
A North Brabant town in the Netherlands with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants, Gemert is historically notable for having been owned by the Teutonic Order from the 13th century until 1807, during which time it maintained independence from the surrounding Netherlands and stayed neutral through many of the region's wars and conflicts. It merged with neighbouring Bakel in 1997 to form the municipality of Gemert-Bakel.
