Ikšķile
Latvia
Ikšķile, a modest town on the Daugava River in Latvia's Vidzeme region, holds a notable place in medieval history as the first capital of the Bishopric of Livonia, established in 1185. Saint Meinhard served as its first bishop, and the town was a centre of early crusading activity in the region before the episcopal see moved to Riga. A short drive from Riga, it has a modest central core with cafés and restaurants.
