At the head of Kenmare Bay in southwest County Kerry, this village punches well above its size with an unusually dense concentration of cafés and restaurants, drawing visitors who use it as a base for the Ring of Kerry coastal route to the north and the Beara Peninsula to the south. Laid out as a planned town in 1670 by Sir William Petty, it later became known for lace made at its convent, and tourism has been part of its character since the railway reached nearby Killarney in the 1850s.
