Modest town in Finland's North Savo region, Kiuruvesi sits alongside a substantial body of water in a municipality where lakes and waterways cover a significant share of the total area. Separated from the parish of Iisalmi in 1862 and established as its own municipality in 1873, it gained town status in 1993.
