Major Jewish centre from the 9th to the 12th centuries, Lucena in Córdoba province is known historically as the "Pearl of Sefarad" — a name rooted in its once Jewish-majority population. The town holds a concentration of historic churches in its centre and carries a strong Marian devotion, with its patron, María Santísima de Araceli, named Perpetual Mayor in 1955. Several UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
