Masyaf is a Syrian town in the hills of Hama Governorate, known above all for its large medieval castle that served as the headquarters of the Nizari Ismailis and their Assassins unit. Set between the coastal mountains and Syria's interior plains, the town draws on a religiously diverse heritage of Ismaili, Alawite, and Christian communities. The wider region sits near UNESCO World Heritage sites.
