Meiningen
Germany
A former ducal capital on the River Werra in southern Thuringia, Meiningen served as the seat of the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen from 1680 to 1918 and retains a historic old town of half-timbered houses, classicist buildings, and parks still enclosed by medieval moat traces. The town gained wider renown through a sweeping theatre reform under Duke Georg II and a celebrated period of the court orchestra under conductors including Hans von Bülow and Max Reger. A walkable centre with cafés and restaurants sits within reach of mountain scenery.
