Montilla, a town in Andalusia's Province of Córdoba, is the capital of the Montilla-Moriles Denominación de Origen, producing wines and vinegars from the Pedro Ximénez grape that carry EU protected status. The town was the birthplace in 1453 of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba — known as El Gran Capitán — in a castle whose ruins still stand above the centre. Granted city status by Felipe IV in 1630, it sits south of Córdoba within reach of several UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
