New Territories

Hong Kong

The largest of Hong Kong's three regions by far, the New Territories stretch from the edge of Kowloon north to the mainland Chinese border and take in more than 200 outlying islands, including Lantau. Leased from Qing China by Britain in 1898 and returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, the area is defined by mountainous country parks, the long-distance MacLehose Trail, and a landscape that shifts considerably between its western, northern, and eastern districts — Sai Kung in the east being the most rugged.
