Rjukan, a pocket-sized town in Telemark's Vestfjorddalen valley, is best known for the World War II heavy water sabotage operations at the nearby Vemork hydroelectric power plant — and for the large mirrors installed on the mountainside in 2013 to reflect sunlight into the town square during the months when the surrounding peaks block direct sun entirely. Built largely by Norsk Hydro in the 1910s and 1920s, the town is now part of the Rjukan–Notodden Industrial Heritage Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2015.
