Siilinjärvi
Finland
A lake-dense municipality in North Savo, eastern Finland, where water makes up roughly a fifth of the total area across more than a hundred lakes, including Kallavesi and Juurusvesi–Akonvesi. Located just north of Kuopio, Siilinjärvi is the birthplace of former Finnish prime minister and European Commissioner Jyrki Katainen, and hosts Kuopio Airport alongside a Finnish Air Force base. The Yara apatite mine is a significant local employer. The municipality's name translates loosely as "Hedgehog's Lake," though it derives from a Sámi word for "winter dwelling."
