A small Guatemalan town in the mountains of Quetzaltenango department, Almolonga sits at the foot of Cerro Quemado — a volcanic lava dome complex known locally as "La Muela" (The Molar) for its distinctive shape. Thermal springs on the volcano's northern and eastern slopes signal its latent activity, and the summit offers views across the Quetzaltenango valley toward the volcanoes Santa María and Siete Orejas. The town lies just south of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala's second-largest city.
