Balbriggan
Ireland
A coastal town north of Dublin where the name "balbriggans" — the long underwear once worn by Queen Victoria and the Czarina of Russia — originated, Balbriggan grew from a fishing village into a textile centre after 1780, producing cotton and linen goods including the garments that carried its name worldwide. The town also saw a significant episode during the Irish War of Independence in September 1920. Today it sits on the water with a compact centre and easy access to the wider Dublin region.
