Breiðdalsvík

A little fishing hamlet on Iceland's east coast, Breiðdalsvík sits at the mouth of the Breiðdalur valley where it meets a broad cove. The Breiðdalsá river draws salmon anglers, and the former general store now houses a geological centre with exhibits on the volcanologist George Walker and the linguist Stefán Einarsson, who was born in the valley. A craft brewery and year-round hotel serve visitors, and the town holds an unusual footnote: a German warplane strafed a residential building here on 10 September 1942, one of the few WWII air raids on Icelandic soil.
