Changhua's most recognizable landmark is the Great Buddha Statue of Baguashan, a 26-metre figure atop Bagua Mountain overlooking the city, its approach lined with statues from Buddhist lore. The city also holds what is said to be Taiwan's oldest Confucian temple, along with the Lai He Memorial Museum and the historic Xiaoxijie street. Once the political and economic centre of central Taiwan before Taichung's rise, Changhua carries the old nickname "Bamboo Town," a reference to the bamboo fortress built by Han Chinese settlers.
