Merkinė
Alytaus apskritis · Lithuania
Sitting at the confluence of the Neman and Merkys rivers inside Dzūkija National Park, Merkinė is a pocket-sized Lithuanian village with deep roots — the hilltop castle here was first recorded in 1359, and the settlement itself dates to at least the 13th century, when it formed part of a defensive triangle with Kaunas and Vilnius against Teutonic Order incursions. The historic town centre is a state-protected monument, and the village is also known for black ceramics craftsmanship and gastronomic tourism.
